Church of Scientology v Google

There is an article here about the Church of Scientology's lawsuit against Google and Google's subsequent changes in policy.

Apple wants to simplify desktop search.

Apple works on desktop search. Steve jobs says- "Search is a problem for every personal computer company. It's easier to find a document in a million pages(Sandeep says-don't you mean 4 billion, Steve?) on the Web using Google than it is to find a document on your hard drive." Sounds like a case of Good IT reducing search costs!

Upstarts Vie to Outcrawl Google

There have been discussions about how search engines can be better searchers. Search engine companies are continuously seeking better ways to categorize or classify information on the Web. Currently, all search engines have no access to the “invisible Web” which resources are locked up in databases. Most databases are fee based. The article also talks about how Yahoo will help businesses get their invisible website indexed.

Privacy on Google

While researching for my group's topic I found an interesting article here discussing google's level of privacy for it's users. It puts at rest many rumors about google getting a "Big Brother" award and discusses what google really records and what it knows about you, the user.

Who is watching

Here is the article from Popular Science. It is quite interesting to look at how much our every day routine actions become less and less anonymous with technoligical progress ( or computarisation).

More about Google Bombs

We have seen a couple of them in class including the search query "waffle" returning "John Kerry" in first position. Dicky also posted a link about them. In a nutshell, a group of people link to a page of their choice using a specific link-text to push this page up in the Google ranking. This is usually done for political reasons or for fun. Here are a few other examples. Look at the pages appearing in first postion:

Weapons of mass destruction

failure or miserable failure

French Military Victories

I wanted to point out to the class the right way to post a link.

This is the wrong way. "Prof. Sandeep's page is http://faculty.washington.edu/sandeep."

This is the right way. "Prof. Sandeep's page is here."

The second approach makes it much more readable. To do this, 1-select text, 2-click on the "insert link" icon in the post window (it is the one just after B and I- it looks like a globe with handcuffs- don't even ask) and 3-enter(or paste) the link in the dialog box that pops up.

Got Blog?

Blogs were first introduced in the late 1990's by techies using special software and now there are possibly as many as 2.5 million blogs out there. With our very own blooger.com being one of the first to introduce Blogging for free! Well, now Mr. Bill Gates who is a huge fan of Blogging, is thinking about doing a personal log in which he will share parts of his business and personal life with the world! You know if Mr. Gates is doing something it's got to be cool!

I selected this article because we have talked about Blogging in class and to many of us it's a new concept.

Spyware

Anyone worried about spyware will be happy to hear that as of Thursday a congressional committee approved a bill which will crack down on spyware. This bill will require software makers to design software which provides notification before loading any program which will track information.

Sites to try when Google fail you

When you need to find something on the internet and Google or Yahoo! fail you, what sites should you try? In a recent article: Sites to try when other engines fail you, librarian Gary Price and researcher Tara Calishain share some of the best options. The main categories are:

• Local library websites
• News search sites like Google News and Topix.net for local news.
• Audio searching sites like SpeechBot
• Blogs
• Other Search engines. Among the search engines cited, I really liked Vivisimo, Gigablast and ZapMeta. Give them a try!

Cashing in on Google's brand name

Some people are trying to cash in on Google's brand by registering domain names using the word Google. Those names include billionairegoogles.com, boycottgoogle.com, googlelicious.org, and googlelawyers.com. Follow the link for more names:

There's a Gaggle Chasing Google

Yahoo and Microsoft have already started preparing next generation search technologies to compete with Google. It will be interesting to see what will happen to Yahoo and Google’s relationships in the future. In March 2003, Nielsen/NetRatings indicated that Yahoo search trailed Google by roughly 10% in number of unique visitors.
See Wired News article.

Google Bomb

This is an interesting story that I found about the glitch on google search algorithm that makes someone's site to be displayed in top rank or first page of the search result. It's published back in year 2002 and I just wondering if they already fix it.

http://www.microcontentnews.com/articles/googlebombs.htm

If it's not fixed yet, it's probably can be a good way to "hack" google to have your site displayed in top rank :D

Enjoy!

A slightly different take on Google

Lest we get carried away with awe and adulation for Google and its success, it is always interesting to consider other perspectives. The folks at Google-Watch.org have quite a different perspective on everyone's favorite search engine. =)

Another article on spam ...

Apparently the FTC has rejected the notion of a "do not email" registry, similar to the "do not call" registry currently in effect (how effective it is, the jury is still out at our house!) for telephone service.

I wonder why the FTC thinks that the registry would create more problems with spamming ... I'm new to this Internet world and its terminology ... blogs, spamming, etc., so I'm open to anyone passing on their knowledge!

Yahoo and Google Hit by Internet Attack

This is an article about a hacker that hit both Yahoo and Google today.

An Interesting Article on Spam

Here is an interesting article on Spam. We all hate it and the problem is continually getting worse all around the world. What can we do to minimize these problems?

How to post.

On this blog, I expect all of you to post interesting things relating to search and the web. See Khambee and Matthew's posts for ideas. You can also see bigger blogs such as Slashdot for ideas. In addition to posting, you could also comment on others posts. I have deleted the posts that just said testing. This should conserve space. Add value, folks.

Technology briefs

Great news! As of Friday, June 18, Google has allowed Web logs and smaller online publishers to include its search engine on their sites. This will definitely help Google increase its market share and advertisements revenue.
